Team/Role Overview

Operational Risk Management's mission is to work proactively with the business to embed a strong operational risk management culture and framework across Citi, which manages the risks and ongoing exposures that arise from the development and delivery of products and services to our clients. 

Operational Risk is defined as the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, systems, or human factors, or from external events.  Broadly these are:

  • Process risks such as execution, business disruption, systems failures
  • Conduct risks such as business practices, market conduct, employment practices, workplace safety, internal theft & fraud
  • External risks such as damage to physical assets, external theft & fraud

This includes legal, franchise and reputational risk, but excludes strategic risk and the risk associated with credit or market risk judgements.

Operational Risk Management (ORM) asks questions such as: What are the major drivers of Operational Risk?  What developments (internal and external) could dramatically increase Operational Risk exposure and how large is the potential impact?  What are the lasting solutions for minimising losses? What can and should be done to monitor and mitigate Operational Risk? 

What you’ll do

A key area of focus of this role will be the Markets business within Europe. The role includes promoting continuous improvement in the design and application of operational risk management activities by:

  • Conducting risk reviews of significant operational events to determine the fact pattern, control gaps and working with relevant businesses and functions implement remediation to avoid a repeat event.  Lessons should be shared to mitigate similar risks elsewhere.
  • Developing strong relationships with regional businesses and country leads by providing value added advisory and independent oversight.
  • Analysing operational risk data (typically losses, metrics or assessment results) to identify areas of excessive risk and also to ensure past mitigation efforts are having the desired effect.
  • Investigating what is causing metrics to deviate from trend and escalating situations that pose excessive risk.
  • Identifying root causes of major internal or external losses and ensuring similar businesses around the world are aware of risks and recommendations.
  • Applying their expertise in the development and analysis of operational risk focused scenario workshops.
  • Educating businesses /functions on the ORM framework.
  • The strong candidate will build and make use of a solid understanding of a wide range of businesses and a network of business relationships. 

What we’ll need from you

  •  Experience in the financial services industry, with exposure to operational risk and/or internal control concepts.
  • A strong familiarity of financial products and processes across all of Citi’s businesses present in the countries with strong focus on the Markets businesses.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to sway opinion and negotiate successfully at a senior level.
  • Confident and concise verbal communications skills, including the ability to influence and negotiate with senior members of staff.
  • Experience of managing multiple tasks, with variable stakeholders and deadlines.
  • The capacity to organise and prioritise workload within a complex environment with competing and subtle resource demands.
  • Excellent knowledge of banking practices and global functions, as well as solid knowledge of related local legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Fluent in English; other relevant languages an advantage, but not essential.
  • Strong analytic skills applicable across all businesses and products with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Strategic and goal-oriented focus.
  • Superior ability to simplify and explain complex issues, drive conclusions. Strong in details without getting lost in them or losing focus on big picture.
